Master shower is almost done.  The bench (in red) will be Carrara marble slab.  Two shower heads: one sticking out of the left wall and the other is a rain head coming out of the ceiling.

Built in shampoo shelf with gently sloped bottom edge to prevent standing water - this was all included in our tile bid

Bullnose tile to finish the edge of the shower walls

Pental Rondec Schluter strip in bright white - this small PVC piece will line in the top edge of the tub backsplash, since we weren't able to find a tile with the bullnose on the 12" edge

It's no secret that I've been incredibly involved throughout the entire process of building this house.  One of the things that I wanted to see was where and how the slabs were fabricated.  My Dad and I headed up north to the slab yard where our countertops are being fabricated.  It was there that we met the most crazy, hilarious Polish dude.  He walked us through the shop, showing us the templates for our counters.  I never realized that the templates were just "sticks" that were held together with hot glue.  They're then etched on the actual stone and cut with a giant saw.
These frames are the templates for our kitchen and bath counters.

The crane that lifts the slabs.  It's actually sort of freaky to see a beautiful slab dangling from that little clip.

One of the great things about paying a visit to the slab yard was that I was able to find a remnant for our powder room.  Here's the slab that we'll be using for the small, single vanity downstairs:

3cm Pental polished "Alpine" quartz
Our countertops are currently being fabricated and I can't wait to see what they look like once they're installed!

  2. Hi there! I found you by searching for the exterior paint color Cityscape, and I have loved looking through the posts of your build! We are also in the process of building, though we are having a shell built and then MY engineer hub:)will be doing all of the plumbing, electrical, hvac and finishing, whew! Minus a few things we'll be hiring our like sheetrock and insulation. We're also on a pretty tight budget so him doing so much will help us be able to afford a much nicer finished product. I was hoping you could let me know what size your master shower is? We're working now on dividing up our shower and tub area, planning a 4.5 or 5' shower and a 5.5 or 6' tub. The size of your shower seems so nice. Also how do you like the larger subway tile? Were those special order, I know I've seen 4x8 but I don't think I've seen 4x12 before. It looks amazing! I'm jealous of your marble slabs, none of that in our house, and I can't wait to see it finished! Though I just realized that while I'm going through your posts in order from last October, you likely have them all finished by now so I'll get to see them soon, lol. you can email me or reply, juliabrianne at gmail dot com. THanks so much for your time, and congrats on your home!!! Julia

  3. Hi! I found your post by searching for the type of grout you used. We are doing a similar floor
Mosaic with hexagon. Could you tell me how the white grout has held up? Does it stain easily or how is it to clean? I have two preschool boys so the cleaning aspect in a bathroom is SO huge in our grout choice. Thank you so much!

    1. Hi Sarah, thanks for your comment! We used the color "Bright White" for our Spectralock grout on the flooring in our son's bathroom. As you can imagine, it gets a little funky around the toilet, but cleans up easily with a gentle cleaning spray and some elbow grease. In hindsight, I would have gone with a light gray grout, which would be similar to the appearance of the flooring in this post before the grout was installed. With boys, a light charcoal gray would require much less maintenance and really let the tiles pop. Gray is also enough of a neutral, and has the old world feel of a bungalow. Let me know if you have more questions!
